Who can open what your AI made?

Checked against each vendor's own pages on 10 October 2026. The sharing rules for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot change every few weeks, and most of the changes decide whether someone outside your company can open what you send. Here they are side by side, with what each one means when the person on the other end is a client.

Can you share AI output with someone outside your company?

Sometimes. On personal plans all four can share a chat by link, though Claude artifacts made since September need a Claude account to open. On company plans, chat links stay inside the organization, the ways out depend on admin settings, and most of them make the viewer sign in. None of the four shows the sharer who opened it.

The short version

  • ChatGPT: personal chat links are public to anyone with the link. Workspace links stay in the workspace. Sites can go public, or to named outsiders who must sign in.
  • Claude: artifacts made since 16 September 2026 need a Claude account to open, even by link. On Team and Enterprise, link sharing outside the company needs an Owner to allow it.
  • Gemini: personal links are public and need no account. Work accounts need an admin switch, and Drive sharing needs a Google sign-in.
  • Copilot: personal links can go to anyone. Work-account links stay in the organization, and outside access to Pages depends on your tenant's guest settings.

ChatGPT

Option Outside your company Viewer account Expiry, revoke, opens
Shared chat, personal plan Yes, anyone with the link Not stated No expiry. Delete the link or the chat to revoke. No open record.
Shared chat, Business, Enterprise or Edu No, workspace members only Yes No expiry. Delete to revoke. Enterprise and Edu admins can turn sharing off.
ChatGPT Site, public Yes, on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise. Off by default on Enterprise. No No expiry. Restrict or delete. Totals of visitors and views, not on Enterprise-owned Sites.
ChatGPT Site, named outside viewers Yes, by email, view only (since 3 September 2026) Yes, the invited account must sign in Remove a viewer. Totals only.
Codex thread snapshot Personal accounts yes, workspace accounts no Not stated for personal links Revoke under Data controls, Shared links. The snapshot does not update.

One more catch for client work: a client inside a ChatGPT Enterprise workspace may not be able to open a personal link at all, because OpenAI says access to personal links depends on workspace settings. Canvas no longer has a live help page, and from 28 May 2026 it is only in legacy models. Sources: sharing conversations, creating ChatGPT Sites, Sites docs, Codex snapshots, release notes.

Claude

Option Outside your company Viewer account Expiry, revoke, opens
Artifact, "Anyone with the link" (made since 16 September 2026) Yes on Pro and Max. Team and Enterprise only once an Owner turns on External sharing. Yes, a Claude account No expiry. Set to Only you to revoke. No open record.
Artifact, email invite (beta) Up to 50 outside people. On by default for Team, off for Enterprise. Yes, on the invited address Unaccepted invites lapse after 30 days. Shows pending or accepted.
Claude Code artifact, public link Yes on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Off on Team and Enterprise until an Owner allows it. Anthropic's pages disagree No expiry. Turning External sharing off stops existing public links. Org audit log only.
Older chat artifact, Publish (made before 16 September 2026) Yes on Free, Pro and Max No Unpublishing is permanent and deletes its stored data.
Shared chat, public link Yes on Free, Pro and Max, not Team or Enterprise No Turn off at any time. A snapshot.
Claude Docs Free, Pro and Max by link. Not outside the org on Team or Enterprise. Yes No email invites on any plan. Owner delete is permanent.
Cowork live artifact (made before 19 August 2026) No external or public links Org sign-in Republish to edit

Claude changes the most often of the four. The practical rule since September: if your client does not have a Claude account, Claude's own sharing has no private way to reach them. The full walk-through is on sharing a Claude artifact privately, and Cowork output has its own page, sending Cowork output to a client. Gemini

Option Outside your company Viewer account Expiry, revoke, opens
Shared chat or Canvas link, personal account Yes, anyone with the link, on gemini.google.com only No Lasts while the chat stays in your Activity, so auto-delete removes it. No open record.
Shared chat or Canvas link, work account Only once an admin allows link sharing (off by default, since March 2026) No Turning the setting off keeps links already shared until they are deleted.
Share through Google Drive, work account Only if your Drive policy allows sharing outside the organization Yes, a Google sign-in Drive's sharing controls

Two details matter more than they look. Anyone with the public link to a shared Canvas app can view and edit data associated with the app, and viewers of a shared chat can continue it themselves. The client version of this is on sharing a Gemini Canvas with a client. Sources: sharing chats, Canvas, admin setting, Drive sharing.

Microsoft Copilot

Option Outside your company Viewer account Expiry, revoke, opens
Shared chat or response, personal account Yes, anyone with the link Microsoft's pages disagree Stop sharing under Data controls. A snapshot.
Shared chat or response, work or school account No, people in your organization only Yes, a work or school account Stop sharing. Admins can turn sharing off and see opens in Purview.
Copilot Pages Guests only if your organization allows it, through people-specific links. Microsoft's pages disagree. Yes, a guest sign-in SharePoint and OneDrive link settings
Copilot Notebooks No, external sharing is not supported Not applicable Shows how many people it is shared with

What this means for client work

  1. Company plans keep links inside the company. ChatGPT workspaces, Claude Team and Enterprise, and work-account Copilot all default to your own organization.
  2. Private usually means the client signs in. Named sharing on ChatGPT Sites, Claude and Google Drive all ask the viewer for an account with that vendor.
  3. Public means public. The no-account options are links anyone can open if the link is forwarded, and none of the four documents a passcode for them.
  4. Admins can switch a link off under you. When a Claude Owner turns External sharing off, existing public links stop working. Gemini works the other way and keeps links already shared.
  5. Links do not expire when you want them to. ChatGPT links have no expiry setting, and a Gemini link can vanish when your Activity auto-deletes.
  6. Nobody tells you who opened it. The closest is totals on a ChatGPT Site, and pending or accepted on a Claude invite.

Where the vendors' own pages disagree

  • Claude Code public links: the Claude Code docs say they open with no claude.ai sign-in. The help center's share page says everyone needs a Claude account. Test with a signed-out browser before sending.
  • Claude Free and Docs: the Claude Docs page says Free can share by link. The artifact plan table gives Free no link sharing.
  • Copilot personal links: one Microsoft page says viewers sign in with a Microsoft account, another says anyone with the link can open it.
  • Copilot Pages and guests: one Loop page says guests cannot open shared Pages by link, another says Pages can be shared with guests if the organization allows it.

Change log

  • 15 October 2026 (announced): Claude Docs sharing turns on by default for Enterprise.
  • 29 September 2026: ChatGPT Space Pages, shareable with named people or a whole space. Enterprise sharing is an opt-in preview.
  • 16 September 2026: Claude chat artifacts made before this date become legacy. New artifacts need a Claude account to open.
  • 3 September 2026: ChatGPT Sites can be shared with named viewers outside the workspace, who sign in to view.
  • 20 August 2026: Codex thread snapshots can be shared by link.
  • 19 August 2026: Cowork live artifacts made before this date stay org-only. Later ones follow the normal artifact rules.
  • 9 July 2026: ChatGPT Sites public beta. Business and Enterprise can publish publicly.
  • 18 June 2026: Claude Code artifacts launch for Team and Enterprise, not public at first.
  • 3 June 2026: Gemini chats and Canvases can be shared through Google Drive from work accounts.
  • 28 May 2026: ChatGPT Canvas leaves the current GPT-5.5 models and stays in legacy models for a limited time.
  • 4 March 2026: Google Workspace admins can allow Gemini conversation sharing by link.

When the built-in options do not fit

If the person you are sending to does not use the same AI tool, or your plan keeps links inside the company, the move that works across all four is the same: get the output as an HTML page and publish it somewhere you control. That is what Stacktree is for, so weigh this paragraph accordingly. A page there opens in any browser with no account, sits behind an unguessable link with an optional passcode, and on a paid plan can be limited to the client's email domain, kept up as long as you like, and tells you when it was opened. The steps for each tool are on Claude, ChatGPT Sites, Gemini and any HTML file.

FAQ

Frequent questions

Can I share a ChatGPT chat with someone outside my company? +
From a personal plan, yes: anyone with the link can view it. From a ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace, no: OpenAI says people outside the workspace cannot view the shared content. ChatGPT Sites are the exception, since they can be published publicly or shared with named outside viewers, who must sign in.
Does a client need a Claude account to open a shared artifact? +
For artifacts made on claude.ai since 16 September 2026, yes. Anthropic's help center says everyone needs a Claude account to open a shared artifact, even with the link. Older published chat artifacts open without one. Claude Code's own docs say its public links need no sign-in, while the help center says they do, so test before you send.
Can I share a Gemini chat or Canvas from a work account? +
Only if your admin allows it. Since March 2026, Google Workspace admins can turn on "Allow conversation sharing via link", which is off by default. Sharing through Google Drive is on by default, but it follows your Drive policy and the person you share with must sign in to a Google account to open it.
Can external guests open a Microsoft Copilot Page? +
Microsoft's own pages disagree. One Loop permissions page says guests cannot open shared Copilot Pages by link, another says you can share individual Pages with guests if your organization allows it, through people-specific links. Copilot Notebooks do not support external sharing, and work-account chat links reach only people inside your organization.
Do shared AI links expire? +
Mostly not on a date you set. ChatGPT says shared links have no configurable expiration. A Gemini link lasts as long as the chat stays in your Activity, so auto-delete can remove it. Claude email invites lapse after 30 days only while unaccepted. Revoking is possible everywhere, by deleting the link, the chat, or the person.
Can I see who opened a link I shared from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Copilot? +
Not by name, in any of the four. ChatGPT Sites show totals of visitors and page views, except for Enterprise-owned Sites. Claude shows whether an email invite is pending or accepted. Microsoft records opens in admin audit logs, not for the person who shared. Gemini describes no open record at all.
What is the safest way to send AI-made work to a client? +
Decide who the viewer is first. If the client uses the same AI tool and plan rules allow it, the built-in sharing works. If they do not, publish the output as a page you control: a private link with no account for the client, a passcode or company email check, an expiry you choose, and a record of opens.
